Achilles Tendon Taping With EAB

How to tape the Achilles tendon using elastic adhesive bandage.
EAB or elastic adhesive bandage is a great for taping the Achilles tendon, in particular, because of its strength. Taping the Achilles reduces the strain on it, especially if you have to be on your feet and suffer from tendonitis, or a partial tear of the tendon.
How to tape the Achilles tendon using elastic adhesive bandage
The following is a guide to to taping the Achilles with EAB. Always seek professional advice if you are unsure.
Materials needed
To effectively tape the Achilles tendon, you'll need the following materials:
- Zinc oxide tape: A non-stretch adhesive sports tape, 2.5cm or 3.8cm wide.
- Elastic adhesive bandage (EAB): Either elastic adhesive bandage or tearable elastic tape.
- Scissors
- Underwrap and adhesive spray (optional)
It is best to avoid using underwrap if you can. This is because tape is more effective when stuck directly onto the skin. However, the area should be shaved first.
Prepare the area
Ensure the foot is clean and dry for proper tape adhesion. Position the leg so it hangs naturally over a bench or table in a slightly plantar-flexed (pointed) position.
Apply anchor strips
Begin by applying anchor strips of zinc oxide tape around the middle of the foot to create a stable base for the support straps. Next, apply a strip of elastic tape around the top of the calf muscles, ensuring it is not too tight to accommodate muscle expansion during movement.
Achilles Tendon Support Strips
Start at the foot anchor and run a strip of elastic tape under the heel and up the back of the lower leg, applying slight tension, then secure it to the top anchor. For additional support, apply another strip from the outside of the top anchor, down under the inside of the heel, up the outside of the heel, and secure it to the inside of the top anchor.
Finish
Finally, secure the support strips with another anchor strip around the top of the calf muscle and an anchor strip around the Achilles tendon to hold everything in place.
